LIBE 477 Assignment 1: Reading Review Part A

One of the main reasons I decided to start a Teacher Librarianship diploma was my time spent in the Qualicum Beach school district. There they had the most amazing resource center available to educators, I knew instantly that I found my calling. My biggest passion is resources, finding them, teaching to use them, learning to apply them, and watching how they can transform lessons.

I think the main issues or opportunities affecting me in my future would have to be learning more about the hands-on skill building ADST (applied design, skills and technology). The idea behind ADST is to teach students in building their curiosity, learning to be inventive and making plans and adjustments when all else fails! ADST encompasses many different skill sets and concepts. I feel that having educators who are knowledgeable about creating spaces for learning these skills will be very valuable in my district. My biggest interests moving forward is technology education, as well as makerspaces.

Makerspaces are most often set up and taught in the library/learning commons and in the past, I’ve found most technology is accessed through the library/learning commons so I feel that both of these would be appropriate to learn and teach as part of being a teacher/librarian.

I have had opportunities to dabble in both of my chosen areas, so I will be looking at creating makerspaces and teaching technology education for grades k-7. First off, I looked on our provincial curriculum website ("Applied Design, Skills, And Technologies | Building Student Success - BC's New Curriculum") from here I choose some keywords that pertained to my two interests.

Keywords:

Collaboration

Designing

Extending capabilities

Coding/Computational Thinking

Digital literacy

Digital citizenship

Robotics

Lego

Woodwork/metalwork

Purposeful play

Application of skills

User centered research

Thinking, Communication, Personal and Social Core Competencies

Design, Plan, Create, Edit

Some questions running through my head as I perused the ADST curriculum were:

"How do I start a makerspace in a school where we have limited resources?"
"How do I make the technology accessible by all?"
"What would this look like with a Kindergarten class vs a grade 6 class?"
"How can I create some sort of foundation when ADST is such an open subject?"

All in all, I see that I have lots to learn and will definitely be doing some research as we move along.
